Ada Software Engineer

Apply

TYMIQ is looking for experienced Ada Developers to join a long-term engagement with a major European air traffic management organization. The client operates one of Europe's busiest and most complex upper airspace regions, and its Flight Data Processing System (FDPS) is a mission-critical, real-time system built predominantly in Ada, with a large code base of over 100,000 lines of code.

You will be embedded in the client's engineering team, providing technical support for the continuous maintenance and evolution of the FDPS. This is a hands-on backend engineering role in a safety-critical environment where reliability, quality, and full documentation traceability genuinely matter — the software you work on keeps live air traffic moving safely.

You will be employed by TYMIQ and assigned to the client's project on a stable, long-term basis. The client highly values staffing continuity, so we are looking for people ready for a multi-year commitment.

Responsibilities

  • Code development & review — implement and review Ada code changes in the FDPS environment, in line with approved change requests.
  • Documentation — update requirements, design, and technical documentation to ensure full traceability and maintain an auditable documentation baseline.
  • Testing & validation — develop test scripts and conduct unit and system testing to validate software modifications and ensure compliance with functional and safety requirements.
  • Incident investigation — investigate incidents affecting the FDPS, identify root causes, and support corrective actions to restore normal operation.
  • Agile delivery — work in Scrum/Kanban sprints using Jira and Bitbucket, under the guidance of the team leader; contribute to meeting agendas and minutes where required.

A typical week: reading and modifying Ada code in a large legacy real-time code base, peer-reviewing colleagues' changes, writing and running unit/system tests, keeping design and test documentation up to date, and picking up incident tickets to diagnose root causes — all within the rhythm of Agile sprints and close collaboration with the client's engineers.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Engineering (related field) — or, if no degree, a total of 6 years of backend development experience in Ada, Java, or C++.
  • Backend development: minimum 3 years of recent professional experience as a backend developer in Ada, Java or C++.
  • Mission-critical systems: minimum 5 years of recent experience maintaining and evolving mission-critical systems with a large code base (>100 KLoC).
  • Linux: minimum 5 years of recent professional experience in a Linux environment.
  • Agile tooling: minimum 3 years of recent experience with Scrum or Kanban using tools such as Jira and Bitbucket (or equivalent).
  • English: C1 listening and speaking, B2 reading and writing (may be assessed at interview).
  • Business trips: able and willing to travel to the client's site near Maastricht, the Netherlands, for on-site visits approximately once per quarter.

Nice to Have

  • Minimum 3 years of recent professional experience specifically as an Ada developer (the single strongest differentiator).
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) domain.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, IT or Engineering (related field).
  • Minimum 3 years of experience writing high-quality technical documentation (specifications, design documents, test descriptions, user manuals).
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural team; eagerness to learn new concepts, domains, and technologies; a positive, open-minded and committed team player (references appreciated).
